          What are Literary Awards?

A literary award is all about celebrating great storytelling. They validate authors, push them into the limelight, and help them connect with a wider audience. They can also be financial lifelines, allowing writers to focus on their craft without worrying about money. Plus, winning an award means your name gets written into literary history with other famous writers.

Sure, some people might argue that these awards can be biased or too commercial, but let’s be honest: their impact is undeniable. They prove that words have the power to move hearts and minds.

          What is Sahitya Akademi Awards?

Sahitya Akademi Awards is one of India’s most prestigious literary honours. The award is given out by the Sahitya Akademi, an independent body which is part of the Ministry of Culture, every year to honour outstanding authors. These awards recognise exceptional books written in various Indian languages.

          Where it all started?

Sahitya Akademi is dedicated to promoting literature in various Indian languages. It was founded by the government on March 12, 1954. It is supported by the Ministry of Culture, though it operates independently.

Their main office is in New Delhi, with regional offices in Kolkata, Bangalore, and Mumbai. The Akademi is also known for publishing books and magazines that focus on literary criticism, research, and other writings about Indian literature.  What makes the Sahitya Akademi special? It’s the only institution that promotes and supports literature in 24 Indian languages, including English.

          The Prize

The Sahitya Akademi Award is a highly prestigious literary honour in India. Here’s what winners of this award usually receive:

Prize Money: The prize money has increased significantly over the years. It started at Rs. 5,000 when the awards first started. It increased to Rs. 10,000 in 1983, Rs. 25,000 in 1988, Rs. 40,000 in 2001, and Rs. 50,000 in 2003. Since 2009, the prize has been Rs. 1,00,000. The first awards were presented in 1955, and it has remained a cherished tradition ever since.

Plaque: Along with the money, winners receive a bronze plaque. It was designed by the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray. This plaque is a special symbol of their literary achievement and recognition by the Sahitya Akademi.

Citation: Winners also get a citation. This is a formal statement that highlights their contribution to literature and explains why their specific work was chosen.

Public Recognition: Beyond the prize and plaque, the award gives authors significant public recognition and prestige.

          Selection Process

The selection process for the Sahitya Akademi Award is detailed and involves several steps to ensure that the most deserving literary works are recognized. Here is a breakdown of the selection process:

          1. Nominations:
          • The nominations are typically for the books published in the previous five years in any of the 24 recognised Indian languages.
          • Authors cannot nominate their own works.
          1. Expert evaluation:
          • Two experts are chosen for each of the 24 recognised Indian languages.
          • These experts prepare a ground list of notable books published in their respective languages.
          1. Advisory Board Recommendations:
          • Members of the language advisory boards receive the ground list created by the experts.
          • Based on this ground list, each advisory board member compiles and forwards their own list of recommended books.
          1. Preliminary Panel Review:
          • A Preliminary Panel is formed for each language, consisting of 10 scholars who are well-versed in that language.
          • The Preliminary Panel reviews the recommendations provided by the advisory board members.
          • The Panel’s role is to further evaluate and refine the list of recommended books.
          1. Jury Selection:
          • The refined list of recommendations from the Preliminary Panel is reviewed by a 3-member jury.
          • The jury, consisting of distinguished literary figures, reviews these recommendations in detail.
          • From the list, the jury selects the final winner for the Sahitya Akademi Award in that language.
          1. Announcement and Awarding:
          • The Sahitya Akademi formally announces the winners.
          • This meticulous and thorough process ensures that the most deserving books are celebrated.
          • So far, 1239 books have been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award across all 24 languages, highlighting the outstanding quality of Indian literature.
