Live Online Writing Courses vs Physical Writing Workshops: Which Should You Choose?

For many aspiring writers in India, writing often gets squeezed between a home to be run, a job to be done, friends to be met, films to be seen, Netflix, Instagram and many other compelling forces. Writing often finds itself at the bottom of the list of priorities.

Between life, commutes, emails, meetings (that could have been emails) and just the everyday routine, finding consistent time to write feels impossible. Way too many people spend years promising themselves they’ll start the novel, memoir, or short story collection “when things calm down.” Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way so they eventually look for structured ways to improve their writing. Two of the most popular options are live online writing courses and Physical (in-person) writing workshops or retreats.

It is worth clarifying first what we mean by an “Online Writing Course.” Some online courses are entirely self-paced and people watch recorded lessons, complete exercises independently, and learn on their own schedule. There are others that function more like virtual classrooms, with live sessions, assignments, peer discussions, instructor feedback, and a cohort of fellow writers learning together. These courses have specific timings, and are high on interaction.

This article focuses primarily on live online writing classes and workshops rather than self-paced recorded courses. While both approaches have value, live programmes offer a level of interaction, accountability, and community that makes them a more meaningful comparison to a residential writing retreat. Self-paced / recorded courses, on the other hand, can be excellent (like Masterclass, Coursera, Udemy) but can also sometimes be little more than a playlist on youtube.

Live Online courses offer flexibility, affordability, and the convenience of learning from home while a writing retreat in India offers dedicated writing time, focused mentorship, creative immersion, and the opportunity to step away from daily distractions. Both options can help writers grow and require an investment of time, money, and energy.

In this guide, we’ll compare online writing courses and physical workshop at writing retreats across several important factors, including flexibility, accountability, mentorship, community, cost, and actual writing time. Whether you are a hobby writer, or someone finally ready to take your writing as a vocation, this post should help you decide which option is likely to deliver the best results for you.

          Advantages of online writing courses

For writers with full-time jobs, the biggest advantage of an online writing course is flexibility. You can attend classes from the comfort of your home while maintaining the usual routine. Online workshops like these are often on weekends.

This format offers the best of both worlds as participants receive live instruction, a chance to clarify any doubts immediately, engage with a community of writers, and build their skills over time, all without leaving their jobs or relocating for a period of study.

Live online classes also allow learning to happen over a period of time where writers can experiment with new techniques between sessions, apply lessons to their own projects, and return with questions the following week. This format works particularly well for writers who:

          • Enjoy learning at a steady pace
          • Prefer regular contact over intensive immersion
          • Have professional or family commitments that make travel difficult
          • Are building a writing habit alongside other responsibilities

Accessibility of online courses is also another big advantage. A writer living in a small town has access to the same course as someone living in metropolitan areas or even someone from a completely different part of the world.

          Disadvantages of online writing courses

The same reasons that make an online workshop attractive can easily turn into disadvantages. When a live session competes with office work, family obligations, or simple exhaustion after a long day, writing often gets pushed to tomorrow. Then next week. Then next month.

Even if you make time to attend the session during fixed hours, after class ends, everyday life is still waiting. The work emails and chores pile up. So, while live online classes make learning accessible, they don’t remove the distractions that often prevent writers from making meaningful progress on their projects.

Online learning works best for writers who are already highly self-disciplined. If you can consistently create time for writing despite the demands of a full-time job, an online writing course can be an effective and affordable way to improve your craft.

Advantages of a physical writing workshop

For most writers with full-time jobs, the problem isn’t a lack of information. You have access to countless books, courses, podcasts, videos, and articles teaching everything from character development to publishing strategies.

The real challenge is finding uninterrupted time to use that knowledge. A physical writing workshop at a writing retreat removes many of the distractions that compete for your attention in everyday life. You have no excuse to check work email when you have applied for leave to travel to another location to attend a workshop. For those few days, your work responsibilities take a pause, daily chores disappear and  your primary responsibility is to learn, write, and engage with your fellow participants.

Many writers spend months trying to carve out thirty minutes here and an hour there between work and family commitments. At physical writing workshops, they suddenly have entire days dedicated to their learning and writing. That helps create a level of focus and momentum that is difficult to replicate during your regular life.

This is particularly valuable for writers working on larger projects such as:

          • Novels
          • Memoirs
          • Non-fiction books
          • Short story collections
          • Poetry manuscripts

These projects require sustained attention and as such they benefit from long stretches of uninterrupted writing and maybe even editing.

A physical writing workshop at a writing retreat also creates an environment where ideas, solutions, and breakthroughs come easily when a participant is no longer juggling competing demands.

Disadvantage of a physical writing workshop

Of course, the complete immersive experience comes with a cost. Unlike an online writing course, a residential writing retreat requires travel, time away from work, and a greater financial investment.

However, many writers find that the concentrated experience delivers months’ worth of progress in a much shorter period.

          Learning vs Doing

One of the biggest differences between an online writing course and a physical writing workshop is the balance between learning and doing. Most online courses are designed to disseminate information. If your goal is to build knowledge and understand the fundamentals of craft, online learning can be extremely effective.

Many writers become very good at learning about writing without actually spending much time writing. They watch videos about plotting. They read books about character arcs. They attend webinars about publishing. Yet the manuscript itself remains unfinished. It is mainly because learning feels productive, while writing often feels difficult, uncertain, and vulnerable.

On the other hand, at a writing retreat while there is certainly learning involved, the emphasis is usually on actually writing. Participants are encouraged to take ideas from workshops and immediately put them into practice while they are still at the retreat. Instead of simply discussing storytelling techniques, writers spend hours working on their own stories. This is why many participants report making significant progress during a writing retreat. They are not only learning new concepts but also applying them immediately while the ideas are still fresh.

When deciding between an online writing course and a physical writing workshop at a writing retreat, ask yourself, “Do I primarily need more knowledge, or do I need more dedicated time to use gain knowledge and actually apply it?” Your answer will help you decide which option is likely to serve you best at this stage of your writing journey.

          Feedback and Mentorship

Writing is mostly a solitary activity, but improving as a writer requires help through feedback – either from a teacher or the relevant community of readers and other writers.

During online workshops, writers often work with the same instructor and cohort for weeks or months, allowing mentors to track progress over time. Assignments, workshop discussions, and peer critiques create multiple opportunities for feedback and revision. This gradual approach can be particularly effective for writers who learn best through repeated practice and incremental improvement.

On the other hand, a physical writing workshop offers a more concentrated experience. Instead of interacting for a few hours each week, participants spend several days learning, writing, and discussing their work in the same environment. Conversations that might take several weeks to unfold online can happen over a single afternoon.

Retreats also create opportunities for informal interactions. Questions arise during meals, walks, writing sessions, and discussions with fellow participants. Some of the most valuable insights often emerge outside the formal programme itself.

          Community and Networking

Writing may be a solitary pursuit, but it doesn’t have to be lonely. Having a community of fellow writers who understand the challenges they face can make a big difference. Such communities can take the shape of the First Draft Club.

You can also find closely knit writing communities in courses. Online communities may work, but in our experience they tend to be less deep, and the bonds are just not as tight. Even if a course can bring together participants from across the world and provide the chance of connecting with a larger number of like minded people, the bonding is lighter. Writers can connect through discussion forums, group chats, and social media. However, online relationships often face practical limitations. Interactions tend to be shorter and more transactional. Often, participants complete the course and gradually drift away once the programme ends.

Strong connections can certainly form online, but they often require deliberate effort from everyone involved.

A physical writing workshop creates a different kind of community because when participants live together, write together, share meals, discuss craft and spend several days together in the same environment, the connections forged are stronger. Many writers leave a retreat with:

          • Critique partners
          • Beta readers
          • Writing / Accountability buddies
          • Professional contacts

These relationships frequently continue long after the retreat itself has ended.

          Cost or Value

We have touched upon budget briefly before. However, we do need to consider the context of value it provides rather than just as a number.

An online writing course is almost always less expensive than a physical workshop at a writing retreat and when comparing an online writing course with a physical writing workshop, it is worth looking beyond the price tag. So the question to address is: What are you actually paying for?

Most online programmes charge primarily for:

          • Instruction
          • Course materials
          • Recorded lessons
          • Live sessions
          • Assignments
          • Community access

This can provide excellent value, especially if your goal is to learn new skills or explore writing before making a larger commitment. However, the effectiveness of the course depends heavily on what happens after each lesson.

          • Will you complete the exercises?
          • Will you make time to write?
          • Will you finish the programme?
          • Will you apply what you’ve learned?
          • The lower cost of an online course can become less meaningful if the material remains unfinished or unused.

A residential writing retreat typically costs more because it includes additional elements such as accommodation, meals, community experiences, dedicated writing time or local culture experiences. Some retreats invest heavily in luxury accommodation, premium facilities, and resort-style experiences. Others place greater emphasis on mentorship, small group sizes, manuscript feedback, and educational value. This is why writers should look carefully at the breakdown of what is included . It is important to keep in mind that the real value lies in the quality of the teachers, the depth of feedback, the strength of the community, and the amount of meaningful writing accomplished and not just the information / knowledge you may get.

If your primary goal is learning craft at an affordable price and flexible pace, an online writing course may offer excellent value. But, if your goal is focused writing time, immersive learning, meaningful feedback, and accelerated progress, a physical writing workshop may justify its higher cost.

Ultimately, the real value lies in what you gain in exchange for the price you pay for a workshop.

Which option is right for you?

There is no universal winner in the online writing course vs writing retreat debate. The best choice depends on your goals, schedule, budget, and stage of the writing journey.

Choose an online writing course if:

          • You are new to writing and want to learn the fundamentals.
          • Your schedule is unpredictable.
          • You prefer learning at your own pace.
          • You have limited time or budget.
          • You already have a consistent writing habit.

Choose a physical writing workshop course if:

          • You are serious about completing a writing project.
          • You struggle to find uninterrupted writing time.
          • You want personalized feedback and mentorship.
          • You learn best through immersion and interaction.
          • You need accountability and creative momentum.

Many writers discover that the most effective approach is not choosing one over the other, but to choose both at different stages of their writing journey. It can be a great combination.

So, now you know the strengths and limitations of both approaches and you know what questions to ask before investing your time, energy, and money. Whether you choose an online course, a physical writing workshop, or a combination of both, remember that no programme can do the actual writing for you. Good luck, and happy writing.
