7 Books by Devdutt Pattanaik

I still remember the first time I picked up a book by Devdutt Pattanaik because it wasn’t an ordinary read; it was a whole experience. Until then, Indian mythology felt like something academic or something reserved for festivals and rituals. But Devdutt Pattanaik’s words changed that. His storytelling bridged the gap between the epic and the everyday. Jaya didn’t just re-introduce me to mythology, it pulled me into a whole new literary world. Since then, I’ve read many authors and many mythological retellings, but Devdutt Pattanaik remains the reason I fell in love with Indian mythology fiction.

For aspiring authors, Devdutt Pattanaik’s work is a masterclass in storytelling. He shows how form and structure can be adapted to suit complex themes. He shows you how illustrations, sidebars, and even question-answer formats can make difficult content engaging. You can learn how to blend voice and vision, how to respect your source material while also taking creative liberties to make it relevant to modern readers.

But perhaps the most important lesson Pattanaik offers is that mythology isn’t dead. It is not something to be locked away in temples or textbooks or just for spirituality. It lives on in our metaphors, our boardrooms, our relationships, and our politics. The same dilemmas that haunted Yudhishthira or Rama are very relevant today too, if only you know how to put it in context.

He also opens the door for Indian writers to take pride in their own cultural storytelling traditions. In a publishing world often dominated by Western structures and tropes, Devdutt Pattanaik’s success proves that stories rooted in Indic frameworks can not only thrive but also deeply impact readers. He gives you permission to embrace local myths, dialects, and beliefs as narrative gold.

And if you’re one of those writers who’s been toying with mytho-fiction ideas in your head but haven’t quite figured out how to shape them, there’s no better time than now to take the plunge.
