Mystery / Thriller / Suspense Novels by Indian Authors

From the narrow lanes of colonial Calcutta to the underbelly of modern Mumbai, suspense novels by Indian authors have cast quite a wide net over the years. A murder mystery in Bangalore does not feel like one set in Delhi. A noir thriller in Mumbai carries a different taste from a quiet domestic suspense unfolding inside a middle-class family home. They often put a spotlight on humanity’s favourite hobby of hiding terrible things behind respectable curtains. Not to mention, but from a Robin Hood-esque criminal to a female super-cop to a mild mannered intellectual truth seeker – the range of choices of protagonists for you to follow is also quite wide.

The range of these stories, settings and protagonists also reflect India’s diversity in the literature world. Bengali classics like Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi laid the foundation for modern detective fiction, while contemporary authors such as Sujata Massey, Abir Mukherjee, and Vikram Chandra have broadened the genre for the global audience. Whether you enjoy a classic whodunnit or a fast-paced thriller or historical intrigue or dark psychological suspense, this list of suspense novels by Indian authors has something to offer to every kind of reader. Some books will make you race through pages at 3 a.m. while others will leave you unsettled for the longest time after the final chapter. Frankly, isn’t that the entire point of good suspense fiction?

          ———

“I’m drawn to crime writing because it allows me to explore the hidden fractures beneath ordinary lives — the secrets, moral ambiguities, and emotional complexities that drive people to extreme acts. Whether in fiction or true crime, I’m fascinated by psychology, tension, and the uneasy space between truth and perception. Fiction gives me the freedom to shape motives, twists, and emotional closure, while non-fiction demands fidelity to facts and real-world consequences. These are elements I have been experimenting with in the Detective Agni Mitra series as fiction and in my non-fiction books like The Highway Murders, Death Served Cold and The Great Indian Heists.”

“As a voracious reader of crime fiction, what attracts me most in this genre are the human emotions at the core of thrilling narratives. That’s what I look forward to when I pick up a book. I also read a lot about the technical advancements in forensics and general investigation methods, especially with the application of artificial intelligence.”

          ~ Sourabh Mukherjee

          _____

“I would love to read more Indian mysteries that are rooted in our own landscapes and social realities, especially stories set in unconventional, lesser-known parts of the country. There is so much untapped potential beyond the big-city canvas! I love reading authors who bring unique local histories and textures to life, making the setting itself feel like a character.”

          ~ Moitrayee Bhaduri
