August 6, 2025 to August 10, 2025

If many magical shers reside in your mind and you’ve grown up on Ghazals, then you might enjoy this event.
This is not a writing workshop. It is a Ghazal and Shayari appreciation course that takes a dive deep into the nuance and layers of the work of the masters. For three full days a handful of people will immerse themselves into wonderful lines, their weave and weft. We’ll travel in time, and span centuries as we meet wordsmiths – Mir & Ghalib, Faiz & Sahir and many many others.

Every language is beautiful, but when it comes to poetic expression, Urdu stands apart. The flat “If many shers reside in your mind” (above) turns into “Agar kayi sher aapke zehen mein rehte hain…“. Urdu can make even a dull thought musical. It can elevate the mundane. This workshop will take you deeper into this wonderful language and the intricacy and simplicity it can offer.
RJ Sayema Rahman has spent decades immersed in the magic of Urdu, Shayari and Ghazal. Along with Sayema, we’ll explore the themes of love, faith, sufism and so much more. We are thrilled that she will lead this immersion for us. Her detailed profile is shared below.
The idea of this event came from Sanjaya Sharma, who probably heard the line “Ke yun hota to kya hota” and called Chetan who runs the Himalayan Writing Retreat. Thanks, Sanjaya. (Sanjaya retreat pahle do baar aa chuke hain. Ab teesri baar aane ke baad unhe “HWR Junkie” ka khitaab diya jaye ga.)
This masterclass will be held at the Himalayan Writing Retreat in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. It is rated 5/5 from over 300 google reviews. CN Traveller also covered it in this article.

FAQs
1. Why should I choose HWR Workshops?
- Personal Attention: We do not take more than 15 students in a class. You get a lot of personal attention and feedback. No classrooms of 20-30 people or one-way pre-recorded videos here.
- Class Quality: For most courses, we filter our participants. You cannot just pay and sign up. We need to see a writing sample (in our application form) to ensure the class is of a uniform standard.
- Cost per hour: Our courses are long and intense. As an example, the Creative Writing course is 18000 for 24 contact hours (3 days, 8 hours each day). The cost per hour = 750 / hour. That is comparable to many of the “cheaper” courses.
- Quality of faculty: No lightweights here. Many of our faculty are award-winners. All are experts and great teachers. We don’t settle for average.
- Feedback scores: Across courses, we are rated 4.5/5, or higher. You can read our reviews HERE.
2. Do I get a certificate of participation?
Yes, certificates are available on request.
3. Any discounts for students / other categories?
At the Himalayan Writing Retreat, we follow a strict No-Discount policy.
