As writers, we instinctively dislike Artificial Intelligence (AI). How can something without senses, feelings or consciousness write about the human experience? It seems wrong.
At the Himalayan Writing Retreat we’ve put that discomfort aside to see AI for what it really is: a tool that produces words as per our directions. AI can be used to hone our craft and tell better stories. It can help us try things out efficiently and quickly, to bring more breadth and ease to the writing process.
The closer look at AI revealed how it can be a writer’s friend, and also helped us understand its limitations. We found some surprising ways in which AI can serve a writer, with the writer always remaining in control.
Some examples of how it can be used are:
- Trying different Points-of-view
- Converting boring ‘tell’ into engaging ‘show’
- Strengthen character, enrich detail
- Control the pace of your storytelling
- Edit like a pro
and much more.
We dug into these, and many more aspects of ‘AI for creative writing’ in two workshops in Bangalore and Mumbai in October / November 2023.
Participants loved the workshop and left with deep insight and a new confidence on how to handle AI.

About the Instructor
Chetan Mahajan leads this creative writing course. Chetan has spent two decades working in on-line learning, both in the US and India. He started teaching online in 2006 as a faculty member at the University of Phoenix online.
Chetan is a Penguin-published author and an award-winning blogger. Chetan and his wife Dr. Vandita Dubey (also a published author) moved to the Himalayas almost a decade ago. There they founded the Himalayan Writing Retreat.
