Factors at play behind the book editing charges:

          1. Length of the book: The length of the book is one of the key factors that can influence editing charges in India. It is directly proportional to the length of the book. Since longer books have a greater amount of content to review and revise, it takes more time and effort to edit them. So, it is obvious that editing charges would be higher for longer books compared to shorter ones. Some editors offer package deals based on the overall word count of your manuscript instead of going with the traditional per-word pricing method.

Let us throw in some numbers here to help you understand better.

Book lengthCharge for entire package (in INR)
          Up to 50,000 words10,000- 25,000
          50,000- 1,00,000 words30,000- 50,000
          Above 1,00,000 words60,000- 1,00,000

Note: These rates are approximate and actual charges may vary depending on the other factors at play.

          1. Type of editing: The charges of editing a book depend on the level of editing required for your manuscript. Generally, editors in India offer three types of editing. The charges of editing a manuscript vary in each case. Let us first understand the three levels of editing.
          • Developmental Editing

The developmental editing, which is generally performed at an early stage of writing, is a comprehensive type of editing which focuses on the content, plot development, and narration of your manuscript. The core focus is on the big-picture elements of a story. Think of developmental editing as the foundation of your manuscript. Its goal is to strengthen the overall structure and content of your manuscript. The stronger the foundation, the better the outcome will be.

Tip: Developmental editing is especially valuable for first-time authors or for authors who are still developing their story and require feedback on character development, pacing of story etc. If, as a debut writer, you are struggling to shape and structure your manuscript effectively, hiring a developmental editor should be your top-most priority. A developmental editor will provide you with valuable insights and offer constructive criticism to improve your writing.

          • Copy Editing

Copy editing focuses on the language, style, and consistency of your manuscript. It is like a thorough check-up of your manuscript where the editor carefully reads each sentence and paragraph to improve clarity of your writing and to make it more engaging. The core focus here is on the smaller details and to make the writing clear and concise.

Tip: If, as an author, you are quite satisfied with the plot and content of your manuscript, you can opt for copy editing to polish your manuscript and make it error-free. Copy Editing is a popular choice among authors who have already published their books in the past.

          • Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step performed in the daunting task of editing a manuscript. It aims to spot errors that may have been missed by the editor during initial rounds of editing. Any grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or inconsistencies in your manuscript are trimmed away to make it look professional and accurate.

Tip: Ask a friend or someone else to proofread your manuscript. This can help in spotting mistakes that might have been overlooked by the editor.

          1. Experience and Expertise of the editor:

The experience and expertise of the editor plays a crucial role in determining the charges for editing a book. Editors who are just starting out their careers often charge way less than experienced and reputable editors. They are trying to level up their editing skills and make a name for themselves in the industry. While they may offer affordable rates, they may lack finesse and experience required to edit your book. On the other hand, renowned editors who have spent years working in their field, have gained extensive knowledge and expertise over the years. Their valuable insights and specialized skills can refine your writing and improve the overall quality of your book. Since they charge for their honed skills and experience acquired through all the hard work, their fees may put a strain on your budget. But it is an investment worth making.

Tip: Decide how much you are comfortable spending on editing services and set a budget. Reach out to different editors and request quotes for the services that you require. Conduct thorough research on the experience and previous works of the editors in question and make informed decision that aligns with your budget.

Note: Do not compromise on the quality of the editor just to save a few bucks. This is going to be a one-time investment for your book. It might be worth investing in a reputable editor for the best outcome of your book.

“Let the reader find that he cannot afford to omit any line of your writing because you have omitted every word that he can spare.”  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Editing is crucial as it transforms any piece of writing from its raw and unrefined state to its polished and refined form. Which is why it becomes imperative to invest in a reputable editor. When choosing an editor, there are several key points to keep in mind:

          • Look for an editor who has specialized skills in your specific genre and style of writing.
          • Request for the sample of previous works of the editor in question. This will give you an idea of their editing style and quality of their work.
          • Discuss the editor’s fees to have a clear understanding of the costs involved. The costs must align with your allocated budget to avoid any undue financial strain on you.
          • Make a list of the type and level of editing you require for your manuscript. Make sure your editor offers the required services.
          • Be clear about the editing timeline and any deadlines you have.

Editing takes your manuscript closer to fulfilling your dream of publishing it. Sit back and relish this thought and let the editor do all the magic.

          1. Will an editor or a copy editor help us to get our books published by well known publishers like Penguin and Bloomsbury if we borrow his services by paying him so heavily? Or are we to fend for ouselves continuously amidst the caste , gender and groupism factors?

            1. Hi, i don’t know if I am qualified to answer this, but what you are looking for is an agent, not an editor. As an editor and writer myself I have understood the task of editing and then getting it published is completely different. Kindly search for a good agent. Do not settle for just anyone. It will take time but your will find someone suitable for your genre.

            1. Hi Praveen,
Please feel free to contact editors from this list after checking their portfolio and general research. It is important to find an editor whose experience matches your requirement.

          2. Thank you for this insight into types of editing. I found this blog immensely useful. I have a question regarding the editing process, and here it goes:

In my mind, I work on revisions after the first draft, then try to pitch the manuscript (with the edits I, as an author, can think of), and then the editor at the publisher’s end would work with me on all three types of editing. Here, I mean taking a traditional publishing route. To be precise, I think you only need to hire an editor when you plan to self-publish; is that right, or terribly wrong? :)
